14th GLA Conference unites 2000 logistics companies in Shenzhen
May 19, 2026 at 3:33 PMOn May 5, 2026, an information event was held regarding the construction of the new transshipment terminal at the Freight Transport Center (GVZ) Region Augsburg. Around 60 participants informed themselves about the progress of the project and discussed the future role of the terminal in Combined Transport (KV).
Deutsche Bahn InfraGO, which is responsible for the construction, aims to develop the GVZ into a high-performance logistics location with the new terminal and to shift freight transport increasingly to rail. It is planned to handle approximately 62,000 loading units annually, with the possibility of increasing this capacity to over 100,000 loading units.
GVZ Augsburg as a Central Logistics Location
In recent years, the GVZ Region Augsburg has developed into one of the most significant logistics locations in Southern Germany. Its advantageous location at the A8 as well as the federal roads B2 and B17, along with direct access to the rail network, provide optimal conditions for Combined Transport. The new terminal will replace the existing site in Augsburg-Oberhausen and create additional capacity for the growing economic region.
The connection of the new terminal will be improved by a new feeder track to the Augsburg marshalling yard, while the road connection to B17 and A8 will create an effective junction between road and rail. The operation of the terminal is currently scheduled for mid-2027.
Potential for the Region and the Industry
Deutsche Umschlaggesellschaft Schiene-Straße (DUSS) mbH will operate the terminal in the future and sees great potential for the location. Andreas Schulz, Chairman of the Management Board, stated: “With Augsburg-Gersthofen, we are launching a new terminal for Combined Transport with partially automated operational processes, thereby closing a gap between our locations in Ulm and Munich-Riem.”
The Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Swabia also views the project as an important step towards strengthening the region’s competitiveness. Dr. Kristin Wirth, Mobility Consultant at IHK Swabia, emphasized the significance of the new transshipment terminal for the attractiveness of the economic location of Bavarian Swabia.
A panel discussion highlighted the high demand for the new KV terminal. Ruby van der Sluis, Managing Director of LOKOMOTION Gesellschaft für Schienentraktion mbH, pointed out the necessity of sufficient track capacities to optimally leverage market opportunities.
Ferdinand Kloiber, Managing Director of Kloiber GmbH, emphasized that the new terminal will close an existing gap in the intermodal network, leading to more efficient and environmentally friendly transport. Christian Süß, Head of Region South at TFG Transfracht GmbH, expressed positive views on the development of the location in port hinterland traffic.
The event demonstrated that the KV terminal in GVZ Augsburg is generating significant interest, and numerous companies expect concrete improvements. Ralf Schmidtmann, Managing Director of GVZ-Entwicklungsmaßnahmen GmbH, concluded positively and highlighted the importance of inter-municipal cooperation.
The event was supported by DUSS mbH, Kloiber GmbH, DSV Solutions GmbH, and Spedition Ansorge GmbH & CO. KG. The project team of DB InfraGO AG also organized a construction site tour to provide participants with insights into the current construction progress.
