Apr 15, 2026 at 7:30 AMAround 36,700 new handheld scanners and approximately 13,000 mobile printers: Hermes Germany is investing a double-digit million amount in digital hardware intended for the last mile, logistics locations, and the over 17,000 Hermes PaketShops in the network. These devices are central to the implementation of digital tools and services aimed at optimizing package receipt and dispatch.
Phased Implementation of the New Devices
The introduction of the new devices will take place in several phases. Since the end of March 2026, all Hermes PaketShops have been working with handheld scanners from the manufacturer Urovo. The identical scanners for the last mile and logistics locations have been gradually rolled out since April. The mobile printers from Bixolon are also being distributed to service partners and are now being used for deliveries. Comprehensive testing phases with users were conducted prior to the introduction to ensure that the devices meet the requirements of everyday logistics.
Dennis Kollmann, CEO of Hermes Germany, emphasizes: “For us, customer-friendly services and simple processes for everyone involved in the logistics process are our top priority. Therefore, we have consciously decided on this significant investment in the double-digit million range.” The new devices are intended to lay the foundation for implementing additional digital services throughout the year that will facilitate package receipt and dispatch.
Technical Features of the New Handheld Scanners
The handheld scanners for the last mile, logistics locations, and PaketShops are a special configuration of the UROVO DT66 model. These devices were developed in close collaboration with future users and tailored to the specific needs of Hermes Germany. They feature a bright, enlarged display that is easily readable even in sunlight. A powerful, temperature-resistant battery ensures long runtime, even under extreme weather conditions. Additionally, the scanners are equipped with a high-performance scan engine, dual SIM, large working memory, and a modern multi-core processor, ensuring their future usability. The robustness of the devices has also been taken into account to withstand drops, dust, and water.
Mobile Printers for Delivery
The mobile printers from Bixolon are optimized for use at Hermes Germany and are characterized by their lightweight design as well as dust and splash water protection. Printing is done on self-adhesive linerless labels, which avoids waste. Initially, the printers will be used at customers‘ doorsteps to provide shipment-specific information. Future expansion of the application area is planned.
Hermes Germany continuously pursues the goal of developing digital solutions that make package delivery more efficient and customer-oriented. Proven applications that have already been used on previous scanners will continue to be in use. This includes the in-house developed solution Routemaster, which suggests an optimal stop sequence to the deliverers based on various data, which they can adjust.
Additionally, deliverers can access the navigation solution HERNAV with the new scanners, enabling efficient route planning. This solution takes into account current traffic data and the planned stop sequence. Information on e-charging points is also provided to support the use of electric vehicles during delivery tours.
With the introduction of the new handheld scanners and mobile printers, Hermes Germany is laying the groundwork for further expanding digital services in the area of package dispatch and receipt.
