Apr 14, 2026 at 10:26 AMThe Elbe has maintained a stable water level over the past five weeks, leading to a significant increase in heavy cargo handling at the Upper Elbe ports of Dresden and Lovosice (Czech Republic). The Saxon Inland Ports Upper Elbe GmbH (SBO) and its subsidiary Česko-saské přístavy s.r.o. (CSP) reported a total of 40 project loadings in imports and exports during this period.
Diverse Heavy Goods Handled
The handled goods included transformers, generators, tanks, and cold boxes, with individual weights of up to 225 tons. The handling of these heavy loads was predominantly carried out using the heavy-duty cranes available at the ports of Dresden and Lovosice. For some loadings that posed special requirements due to their dimensions, additional mobile crane technology was employed. In total, 24 inland vessels were used for the oversized and heavy transports.
This development highlights the role of the Elbe as an important waterway for international heavy cargo traffic. Further project loadings are planned for the coming weeks, provided the water level of the Elbe allows it.
