The Quality Group automates with Lotus Robotics
Apr 7, 2026 at 4:16 PMSpring GDS, a company of the PostNL Group, has published its Impact Report 2025, documenting the ESG performance of the past year. The report outlines the company’s progress towards the climate goals of the PostNL Group, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. A key focus is on the decarbonization of international logistics, highlighting various measures to reduce emissions.
Progress in Decarbonization
In 2025, Spring GDS achieved significant progress by introducing 4.1 million liters of renewable hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO100) into its European transport network. This initiative resulted in a reduction of emissions by 11.9 kilotons of CO₂e, equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of over 2,500 cars. Additionally, the Book & Claim program for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) was launched, allowing customers to invest directly in lower CO₂ air transport. This program simplifies the procurement and reporting of SAF usage and helps companies account for emission reductions in their supply chains.
Transparency and data quality in emissions reporting have also improved. Spring GDS has created over 400 CO₂ quarterly reports for customers, providing detailed insights into the CO₂ footprint of their international shipments.
Emission Reduction Strategy
Spring GDS pursues a company-wide decarbonization strategy based on the net-zero goals of the PostNL Group. This strategy includes a reduction of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 90 percent by 2030, as well as a reduction of Scope 3 emissions by 45 percent by 2030, each compared to the baseline year 2021. The measures taken by Spring GDS are aligned with this framework.
Another aspect of the sustainability strategy is the improvement of the circular economy. In 2025, more than 8,000 reusable pallet boxes were integrated into the network, replacing single-use cardboard packaging and reducing waste.
„The issue of sustainability in logistics cannot be solved by any company alone,“ emphasizes Stefan Böhler, Managing Director Germany at Spring GDS. He highlights that collaboration with transport partners and customers is crucial to accelerate the transition to lower CO₂ logistics. The shift from isolated initiatives to a structured decarbonization management across the entire value chain is seen as essential for achieving the net-zero goals in the industry.
