Partnership between RheinMain and Uttar Pradesh
Feb 25, 2026 at 8:35 AMThe Swiss company WinGD has completed the type approval and factory acceptance for its ammonia-powered two-stroke ship engine. These tests, which were completed in January 2026, mark a progress in the efforts towards carbon-free shipping, as the company reports. The examinations took place at the Engine & Machinery (HHI-EMD) facility of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea and were accompanied by the classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) as well as representatives from other major classification societies under the supervision of EXMAR.
Direction decarbonization
The tested engine, a 52-bore engine, is intended for a 46,000 m³ LPG/ammonia carrier commissioned by EXMAR. According to WinGD, the ships of this series are set to be the first of their kind to enter commercial service with ammonia-powered engines. This represents a significant step in the decarbonization efforts of the shipping industry.
