Lübeck: Schwarz rises
Jul 13, 2026 at 7:25 AMIn the first half of 2026, the Port of Rostock recorded a new record in cargo handling: a total of 16.73 million tons of cargo were handled at the quays of the port city on the Warnow River. Of this, 15.9 million tons were handled at the seaport, representing an increase of 100,000 tons compared to the previous record half-year in 2023. The handling figures for the seaport have remained at a high level for four years, as reported.
Handling results
However, the results for different types of goods show varying developments. While the handling of liquid and general cargo slightly decreased according to company information, increases were recorded for bulk goods as well as ferry and RoRo goods. The ferry passenger traffic to Northern Europe reached nearly the level of the previous year with 1.01 million passengers. Dr. Gernot Tesch, Managing Director of ROSTOCK PORT, emphasizes that the port companies and authorities, including shipping companies, handling companies, freight forwarders, and railway companies, have played a crucial role in the success of the seaport.
Additionally, around 830,000 tons of cargo were handled in the other Rostock port facilities, such as the freight and fishing port as well as the chemical port Yara, which corresponds to an increase of 30,000 tons compared to the previous year.
Of the handled goods, 8.8 million tons were attributed to the ferry and RoRo terminal, representing an increase of about 400,000 tons compared to the previous year. Thus, ferry and RoRo goods accounted for 55 percent of the half-year result at the Universal Port of Rostock. In the first six months of the year, the Rostock seaport recorded a total of 3,547 ship calls, compared to 3,712 in 2025. Of these, 2,800 calls were for ferry and RoRo ships, which also represents a decrease compared to the previous year.
