May 15, 2026 at 10:48 AMThe Swiss Rhine Ports have established themselves as an official partner of EuRIS, the European Information System for Inland Waterways. This was achieved through the signing of the European Corridor Management Agreement (ECMA) during the meeting of the EuRIS Council, which took place on May 12 and 13, 2026, in Basel. With this step, Switzerland officially joins EuRIS, which serves as an information portal for inland navigation.
European Information System for Inland Navigation
The EuRIS portal was launched in 2022 and is the result of collaboration among 13 European countries. It aims to provide easy and reliable access to static and dynamic information about European inland waterways. Currently, the system covers more than 29,500 kilometers of these waterways.
River Information Services (RIS) offer a variety of harmonized information services that support traffic and transport processes in inland navigation. The use of these services enhances traffic safety and optimizes transport processes by facilitating the exchange of traffic and transport-related information among stakeholders in inland navigation.
The crews of the vessels receive real-time information about the current traffic situation on their planned routes at all times. This includes information on waiting times, events, and disruptions that may affect travel time and trip planning.
Florian Röthlingshöfer, Director of the Swiss Rhine Ports:
“By joining EuRIS, Switzerland strengthens its integration into the European inland waterway network. Transparent, reliable, and harmonized information is essential for efficient and safe navigation—especially along the Rhine as a central European transport corridor.”
Strengthening European Waterway Networks
The further development of the EuRIS portal is a continuous process that places particular emphasis on user-friendliness and data quality. With Switzerland’s accession, the availability of all waterway sections along the Rhine in the EuRIS portal is ensured, further enhancing the system’s coverage across Europe.
The publication of Swiss waterway data in the EuRIS portal will take place in the coming months after the ECMA has been signed. This represents another step in integrating Switzerland into European inland navigation structures.
