Jul 15, 2026 at 4:55 PMAccording to multiple media reports, Switzerland has joined the „European Ports Alliance“ and is also participating today in the meeting of this association in Dublin.
Today, the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, together with the Irish Presidency, hosted the third ministerial meeting of the public-private partnership of the European Ports Alliance as part of the „Justice and Home Affairs“ Council session.
Focus on Drug Trafficking and Organized Crime
The meeting focuses on the intensified fight against drug trafficking and organized crime in ports as well as in maritime logistics. Criminal organizations are increasingly targeting not only large seaports but also smaller ports and inland transport hubs. This requires a coordinated response from the involved stakeholders.
The Ports Alliance will discuss the challenges of drug trafficking through maritime logistics and explore opportunities for collaboration to strengthen the resilience of ports. Following the meeting, a visit to the Port of Dublin is planned to highlight the practical aspects of the discussed measures.
The European Ports Alliance comprises 28 countries, including 26 EU member states as well as Norway and Switzerland. It brings together over 50 seaports and inland ports, industry associations, the EU Commission, and key EU agencies and institutions such as Europol, Eurojust, the EU Drugs Agency, and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO). This alliance supports the broader efforts of the Commission to combat organized crime and drug trafficking through a comprehensive multi-stakeholder approach within the framework of the ProtectEU strategy and the EU Ports Strategy. These strategies were also addressed in the conclusions of the European Council in June.
Since the last ministerial meeting of the European Ports Alliance in Aarhus, Denmark, 18 additional ports have joined the alliance. The Commission has also allocated 1.3 million euros for the two-year funding of a secretariat for the public-private partnership of the European Ports Alliance to promote activities and collaboration within the alliance.
