May 18, 2026 at 2:10 PMWith an investment volume of 230 million EUR, dm drogerie markt plans to build a new distribution center in Kronstorf, Upper Austria. This project represents the largest single investment in the 50-year history of the German drugstore company in Austria and aims to significantly expand logistics capacities in the region. The new location will complement the existing site in neighboring Enns and optimize dm’s logistics processes.
Expansion of logistics capacities
Harald Bauer, Chairman of the dm Management Board, emphasizes that the investment is necessary to meet growing customer interest. Last year, 375 million products were sold in Austria, which corresponds to an increase of over 20 million units compared to the previous year. Investments in logistics are intended not only to increase efficiency but also to reduce the ecological footprint. „We are automating tasks for which it is becoming increasingly difficult to find people,“ explains Bauer, highlighting that ergonomic working conditions and the integration of people with special needs are also taken into account.
The company has deliberately chosen the location in Austria, even though implementation in a neighboring country would have been faster and more cost-effective. All relevant trades and services will be awarded to regional and Austrian partners, supporting the local economy.
Ecological construction and energy efficiency
The distribution center will be built with a focus on ecological standards. Thomas Köck, Managing Director of dm Austria, explains that wood will be used as a building material to minimize the CO2 footprint. The exterior walls and roof areas will be made of wood, allowing for a CO2 saving of around 360 tons compared to conventional construction methods. Additionally, the building will be equipped with photovoltaic systems that are expected to generate an annual output of 2.3 GWh.
The planning concept aims to minimize the sealing of ground areas. Over 30% of the areas will remain unsealed, and part of the roof will be designed as a green roof. An eco-green park with an area of about 6,000 m² will also be created to promote biodiversity.
Optimization of logistics processes
The new distribution center will be designed for a capacity of around 2,000 outgoing pallets daily and is expected to create about 300 full-time positions in its first year of operation. Logistics processes will be optimized through the use of automated systems and vehicles to increase efficiency. Patrick Aichinger, authorized signatory and head of the international logistics department, emphasizes that bundling transports can improve the utilization of trucks.
The completion of the distribution center is planned for the summer of 2027, while the technical equipment is expected to be finalized by the end of 2027. The commissioning of the new site is targeted for the summer of 2028.
dm’s investment in Kronstorf is seen as a strong signal for the economic location of Upper Austria. Governor Thomas Stelzer and Economic Councilor Markus Achleitner emphasize the importance of the project for regional value creation and the creation of future-proof jobs. Mayor Christian Kolarik of Kronstorf highlights dm’s excellent reputation as an employer and emphasizes the long-term benefits of cooperation between companies and the public sector.
