With today’s groundbreaking ceremony, Amazon has officially commenced the construction of the new distribution center (DAP1) in Enns. The project is being realized by Goldbeck Rhomberg Österreich on behalf of Amazon. Initial preparatory work began as early as April 2023. The ceremony was attended by Christian Deleja-Hotko, Mayor of Enns, and Jordan Kremnitzer, Regional Manager for Austria at Amazon Logistics, among others. The distribution center is set to open in spring 2027 on an area of 6,900 m² and will provide more than 100 direct jobs. Additionally, several hundred jobs for drivers will be created with local delivery partners. Amazon is investing around 70 million euros in the new location, which is seen as a significant signal for the economic location of Upper Austria.
Important Role in Logistics
Distribution centers like the one in Enns play a central role in Amazon’s logistics, particularly for the so-called „last mile,“ the delivery of packages to customers‘ doorsteps. Amazon has been operating its own distribution centers in Austria since 2018. Kremnitzer emphasizes that customers in Austria appreciate fast and reliable delivery, and the company continuously invests in modernizing existing locations and establishing new ones. The new site will serve the Linz region and its surroundings.
Benefits for the Region
The project also brings advantages for the municipality of Enns and the Ennshafen. The shape of the property has been determined to allow for future development of the harbor basin from the southern direction. Amazon will construct a bike path along Main Street and a new bus stop at its own expense. This is intended to contribute to the improvement of local infrastructure. A comprehensive traffic concept ensures that the new location does not cause a noticeable additional burden on the existing road network in Enns. Delivery vehicles will operate outside of peak traffic hours to alleviate congestion.
Mayor Deleja-Hotko stated that Amazon’s establishment in Enns initially raised concerns among the population. He emphasized that agreements have been made to manage delivery traffic so that it does not pass through the city area, except for direct deliveries to residents. Additionally, Amazon will contribute to improving the traffic infrastructure.
Sustainability in Focus
Sustainability plays a central role in the project. Plans include a photovoltaic system with 280 kWp and the use of predominantly renewable energy from the central district heating network. Furthermore, CO₂-reduced building materials will be utilized, and the greening of roof and open spaces is planned. Planting will be done with native species from Upper Austria, and measures to promote pollinators such as bees and insects will be implemented. All green areas will be irrigated using rainwater collection.
The distribution center in Enns is part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge, in which the company has committed to operating CO₂-neutral by 2040. An important aspect is the gradual electrification of the delivery fleet, for which the necessary charging infrastructure will be provided at the new distribution center.
Strengthening the Regional Economy
With the new distribution center, Amazon is expanding its commitment in Austria, particularly in Upper Austria. Around 400 small and medium-sized enterprises from Upper Austria are already using Amazon as a digital sales channel. In 2024, over 2.4 million products from these companies were sold through Amazon. The new location in Enns is intended to support local value creation, create new employment opportunities, and promote regional development. This underscores Upper Austria’s role as an attractive location for innovation and sustainable growth.
