Jun 30, 2026 at 11:33 AMThe Brenner route, one of the central north-south connections in Europe, will be temporarily restricted in the coming weeks due to construction work. ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) announced in a statement that maintenance work will be carried out between July 18 and August 1, 2026. These measures are necessary to maintain the infrastructure for passenger and freight transport and to repair frost damage in the Mühltal Tunnel.
Construction phases and impacts
The construction work is divided into two phases: Starting July 18, the route between Steinach in Tyrol and Brenner station will be closed. This is due to construction sites of the Italian railway, making entry into Brenner station impossible. During this phase, all local trains will only operate up to Gries am Brenner. In the second phase, which lasts from July 23 to August 1, the section between Innsbruck main station and the Brenner Pass will also be closed.
