The combination of different product groups, high shelving systems, and automated processes significantly increases complexity. Sachse explains: „The challenge is that fire risks in the warehouse cannot be assessed uniformly. Each usage unit brings its own hazard potentials that must be individually analyzed and evaluated.“ Areas where easily flammable materials or high-energy substances, such as lithium batteries or certain packaging materials, are stored are particularly critical. Structural conditions, such as large hall volumes and restricted accessibility, also play a central role and complicate fire fighting in emergencies. Therefore, it is essential to integrate fire protection aspects early in the building planning process.

Technical Systems in Fire Protection

Effective fire protection in the warehouse requires the interplay of various technical systems. These include fire alarm systems, smoke and heat extraction systems, and automatic extinguishing systems. Sachse highlights: „Technology only unfolds its full effect when it is precisely tailored to the specific framework conditions. Especially in high-bay warehouses or automated logistics centers, customized concepts are necessary to ensure rapid detection and targeted fire fighting.“ The selection and design of extinguishing systems are crucial. Sprinkler systems, which release water in the fire area through individually triggered sprinkler heads based on temperature, are commonly used in industrial halls as well as storage and production facilities. Water mist extinguishing systems, on the other hand, use finely atomized water under high pressure to achieve effective fire suppression through cooling and oxygen displacement. These systems are particularly suitable for areas with sensitive technology, such as machine rooms or IT and server rooms. Additionally, digitalization plays an increasingly important role. Intelligent sensors and interconnected systems enable early detection of anomalies and support proactive risk management, which shortens response times in emergencies and improves the continuous monitoring of safety standards.

Organizational Measures and Training

In addition to structural and technical measures, organizational prevention is of great importance. Clear responsibilities, regularly updated fire protection regulations, and structured emergency plans are essential to remain operational in emergencies. Sachse emphasizes: „A fire protection concept is only as effective as the people who implement it in everyday life. Therefore, continuous training of employees is a central success factor.“ Regular drills and awareness-raising measures help to identify risks early and respond appropriately. These measures strengthen safety awareness within the organization and promote a culture of responsibility.
