Mar 26, 2026 at 10:41 AMThe federal government and cantons in Switzerland conducted a total of 124,877 inspections of trucks, buses, and vans last year. This figure represents a slight decrease of 2% compared to the previous year and remains nearly stable. These statistics come from a statement by the Federal Offices for Roads (ASTRA) and for Customs and Border Security (BAZG).
Enhanced road safety
According to the offices, heavy traffic inspections are a central tool for improving road safety and ensuring compliance with regulations in the transport sector. For over two decades, the cantons have been conducting these inspections on behalf of the federal government, supplemented by customs checks from BAZG. The measures aim to remove technically deficient or overloaded vehicles from circulation and to ensure compliance with working and resting times.
In 2025, a total of 25,868 vehicles were flagged. In approximately 5,500 cases, transporters were denied further travel, which is nearly at the level of 2024. In the nine federal inspection centers, 55,244 vehicles were checked last year, representing an increase of 9% compared to the previous year. The opening of new inspection centers allows for more comprehensive and technically in-depth examinations, according to the offices.
