Joint venture improves logistics in Central America

FS Logistix has taken a significant step in the development of logistics in Northern Italy with the construction of the new intermodal terminal in Milano Smistamento. With a total investment volume of EUR 120 million, the terminal aims to strengthen Italy’s role in European logistics corridors. Recently, the assembly process of the first three electric gantry cranes was completed, which is considered an important milestone for the project.
Expansion of Intermodal Capacities
The new terminal will play a central role in intermodal transport between rail and road. It is designed to significantly increase capacity for freight transport along the Italy–Switzerland–Northern Europe axis. The electric gantry cranes, which are moved on rails, are crucial for the loading and unloading of containers and are expected to ensure high standards in terms of efficiency, safety, and environmental compatibility.
The installation of the cranes is part of a contract worth approximately EUR 31 million, which was signed in August 2024 with the Austrian company Künz. This contract includes the production, assembly, and commissioning of a total of six cranes. In addition to the cranes, work is also underway on the necessary infrastructure and technological facilities for the first module of the terminal.
Strategic Importance for Logistics
Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, CEO of the FS Group, emphasizes the strategic importance of the new terminal: “With the new intermodal terminal in Milano Smistamento, we strengthen the FS Group’s commitment to the major logistics axes of Europe and accelerate the transition from road to rail.” He highlights that the project not only creates infrastructure but also represents an important hub in a low-emission logistics network.
The terminal will be built on an area of approximately 240,000 m² and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. It will have 15 tracks, each at least 740 m long, with ten tracks designated for handling operations and five tracks for support. Each of the two modules will be equipped with three electric gantry cranes. When fully operational, the terminal will be able to manage up to 44 trains per day and achieve a potential capacity of approximately 395,000 UTI per year.
Bernhard Kunz, President of TerAlp, highlights the importance of the partnership between Hupac and FS Logistix. He explains that the new terminal platform will provide an important opportunity to connect the Italian market and its ports more efficiently with the main markets in Northern Europe. The resulting increase in capacity will also create an incentive for the transfer of goods from road to rail.
