The General Atomics AeroTec Systems GmbH (GA-ATS) presented the Do228 NXT on June 8, 2026, in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich, the latest generation of the Dornier 228 aircraft. The event took place during a ceremonial occasion where the aircraft was showcased in a special livery that emphasized the significance of the event. This presentation marks the first introduction of a new aircraft series manufactured in Germany and sends a strong signal to the German industry as well as the defense sector.
Versatile applications of the Do228 NXT
The Do228 NXT is designed as a versatile aircraft that can be used in both civil and military sectors. Possible applications include passenger and cargo transport, maritime surveillance, and medical evacuations. The new generation is based on the proven technology of the Dornier 228 and integrates modern avionics, an updated cabin, and an optimized cockpit. Additionally, a reliable and cost-effective supply chain is ensured.
With a high cargo capacity of over 2,200 kg, the Do228 NXT offers the ability to quickly convert the cabin for cargo transport by removing the seats. The side doors facilitate loading and unloading, while the rectangular cabin with a usable length of over 7 m supports the transport of bulky goods. Smaller cargo items can be secured with nets, while heavier goods can be fastened to the seat tracks on pallets. This flexibility makes the Do228 NXT a suitable solution for transport missions, even on small and unpaved runways. This and the rapid adaptation to different transport requirements is particularly advantageous for humanitarian missions or logistics in remote areas, where quick response times are crucial.
