Jun 8, 2026 at 10:36 AMThe European Union (EU) and Kenya have deepened their strategic partnership in the areas of trade, digital transformation, and sustainable investments. The aim of this collaboration is to promote economic growth on both sides. This initiative highlights Kenya’s role as a significant partner of the EU in Africa and at the multilateral level, as recently reported by the EU Commission.
Investments in infrastructure and digital connectivity
As part of the „Global Gateway Program,“ the EU and Kenya plan to invest in clean transport solutions and trade facilitation along the Northern Corridor in East Africa, according to the announcement. Additionally, over 3,000 public facilities, schools, health centers, and digital hubs in Kenya will be equipped with high-speed connections.
The discussions between the two partners focused, according to the EU Commission, on deepening cooperation, particularly regarding data adequacy between the EU and Kenya. This process aims to enable secure data exchange and thereby promote digital trade. The EU has acknowledged the positive assessment of the process and intends to conclude it promptly.
Economic partnership and digital cooperation
The EU reaffirmed its commitment to the Economic Partnership Agreement with Kenya, according to the Commission. Both sides recognized the need to clarify outstanding trade issues and to advance the full implementation of the agreement to allow businesses in the EU and Kenya to fully benefit. In the area of digital policy, a deepening of cooperation on topics such as artificial intelligence, digital identity, and secure connectivity was proposed.
Financial support for various projects
Under the „Global Gateway Strategy,“ Executive Vice-President Virkkunen announced several financial support measures. A total of 17 million euros will be allocated to the redesign of the Northern Corridor, which is considered the main transport route in East Africa. These funds are intended, among other things, to help make the route more environmentally friendly and to improve cold chains for fresh goods.
Furthermore, 15 million euros will be invested in expanding the national fiber optic network to promote high-speed connections in underserved regions of Kenya. An additional 12 million euros are earmarked for the digitization of land registration to facilitate proof of ownership for households, farmers, and businesses.
Additionally, 10 million euros will be provided to support the Digital Transformation Centre in Kenya. This center aims to promote digital transformation and create a favorable environment for digital trade and investments. Finally, 16 million euros will be allocated for the transformation of refugee camps into integrated communities, recognizing Kenya’s role in a fragile region and supporting its commitment to hosting refugees.
