DiSTILL project successfully completed in Lusatia
Apr 15, 2026 at 12:57 PMThe development of the autonomous long-range drone „Pantala“ has achieved an important milestone. On April 10, 2026, the first successful hover test of the fully functional prototype took place at the Bundeswehr airbase in Roth. According to the developer Odonata, this test represents a significant step in the development of the drone, which was initiated as part of the ESA Business Incubation Programme.
Technical features and applications
The drone is characterized by a modular design and versatile applicability. With a wingspan of 7.9 m and a maximum payload of up to 80 kg, the drone can achieve a range of over 1,100 km. It is equipped with a hybrid propulsion system that can operate on both conventional fuel and hydrogen. A patented weight-balancing system ensures stable aerodynamic flight.
Pantala’s applications are diverse and include military logistics, reconnaissance missions, and humanitarian operations in disaster areas. The platform is designed to carry out multiple missions in a single flight, making it suitable for various applications in both civilian and military sectors.
Dennis Furchheim, CEO of Odonata, commented on the successful test: „The first hover test was a crucial milestone in the development of the drone. We have come significantly closer to our goal of a fully autonomous long-range drone.“
The development is being advanced with the support of various partners, including the European Space Agency (ESA), the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, and TUM Venture Labs Aerospace. The growing international interest from countries such as the USA, India, the Middle East, and Ukraine motivates the team to continue advancing the development. Further flight tests are already in planning.
