May 1, 2026 at 3:43 PMThe Studiengesellschaft für den Kombinierten Verkehr (SGKV e.V.) has published its current statistical report „Numbers and Facts 2025,“ which is now accessible to members. The report provides comprehensive analyses based on official statistics and can be viewed on the SGKV website at sgkv.de/publikationen/zahlen-und-fakten/. The report is expected to be available to the general public by mid-June 2026.
Content Focus of the Report
The statistical report analyzes both rail and waterway combined transport (KV) as well as total freight transport in Germany for the year 2025. In addition to official statistics, the report also includes forecasts on the volume and performance development for total freight transport and combined transport. Two special excursions provide additional insights: the first addresses the total energy consumption of a container transport from Basel to Rotterdam and graphically compares the various modes of transport. The second excursion deals with the expected medium-term needs for infrastructure replacement as well as the new construction and expansion of KV terminals by the year 2033, based on a survey conducted by SGKV in 2025.
Current Developments in Freight Transport
Initially, three key findings regarding freight transport and combined transport in Germany were presented. In 2025, nearly all transport sectors of freight transport recorded declines, with the exception of maritime transport. The combined transport itself experienced a decrease in both transport volume (-1.6%) and transport performance (-1.4%) compared to the previous year, due to the overall economic situation. However, according to the „Rolling Medium-Term Forecast“ by Intraplan Consult and BALM, the rail-side combined transport is still seen as a growth driver in rail freight transport. A growth of 3.0% in traffic volume and 3.2% in traffic performance in rail-side KV in Germany is expected by 2029.
The publication of the report provides SGKV members with valuable information on the current situation and future developments in the field of combined transport and freight transport overall.
