Strategic Initiatives and Market Position
The positive development of Lufthansa Cargo is attributed to stable market demand as well as strong business in Asia and Europe. The corporate strategy BOLD MOVES, which has been implemented since the end of 2023, aims to establish Lufthansa Cargo among the top 3 global cargo airlines by 2030. A top 5 ranking was targeted by the end of the fiscal year 2026. Lufthansa Cargo has now achieved this interim goal ahead of schedule by the end of the fiscal year 2025. The strategy focuses on three areas: a competitive core business, profitable growth, and a focus on employees and corporate culture.
Capacity Expansion and New Partnerships
In 2025, Lufthansa Cargo significantly expanded its global offering through strategic initiatives. An important measure was the marketing of the cargo capacities of ITA Airways, which encompasses nearly the entire continental and intercontinental network of the Italian airline. With Rome as the fifth hub, the presence in Southern Europe is strengthened, increasing global cargo capacities by approximately 20%. Lufthansa Cargo is now operating as a home cargo carrier in five of the ten largest air freight markets in Europe.
CFO Gregor Schleussner emphasizes that the company grew by 7.3% last year, which is more than double the overall market growth. This development is seen as evidence of the economic strength of the business model.
Network Expansion and Digitalization
In 2025, Lufthansa Cargo strengthened its European presence with new destinations such as Katowice, Rome, and Beirut. Additionally, freighter operations to Tel Aviv were resumed. New connections were introduced in intercontinental traffic to Almaty and from Shanghai to Los Angeles. Belly capacities were also expanded through new routes.
In the area of digitalization, Lufthansa Cargo has made significant progress. A new online booking system accelerates processes, while improved shipment tracking and AI-driven solutions enhance efficiency and service quality.
In the ongoing fiscal year 2026, Lufthansa Cargo plans to deepen its collaboration with Swiss WorldCargo to unlock additional synergies and further strengthen market presence.
