Lease agreement extended with MBS Logistik
Feb 3, 2026 at 9:16 AMRheinCargo has entered into a long-term agreement with thyssenkrupp Steel to take over lime transports from SCHAEFER KALK in Kerkerbach to the thyssenkrupp Steel plant in Duisburg-Nord. This collaboration began at the start of the year and anticipates an annual transport volume of approximately 75,000 tons of lime. To manage this volume, two shuttle train round trips per week, each consisting of twelve freight cars, will be utilized, as reported by RheinCargo.
Transport through Hybrid Technology
For the lime transports, RheinCargo employs a hybrid locomotive of the „Vectron Dual Mode“ type from Siemens. This locomotive allows access to the non-electrified route to Kerkerbach and enables shunting operations to be carried out without a shunting locomotive. According to the company, the diesel drive is only used on the first and last mile, while the main run is conducted under electric traction. This approach helps to avoid empty locomotive trips and ensures low-emission transport, as stated by RheinCargo.
Additionally, RheinCargo faces a challenge as part of the construction project „General Renovation of the Right Rhine,“ which is being carried out between Troisdorf and Wiesbaden. Starting in July 2026, a section of the route between Kerkerbach and Duisburg-Nord will be closed for several months. To ensure supply during this time, RheinCargo plans to utilize alternative connections via the left bank routes or the Lahn-Dill area.
