(Haiterbach) – For the export of lithium-ion batteries (LI batteries) from Germany to North America, Clasquin Germany GmbH has sought support from Alfred Schuon GmbH. Since March 2020, the logistics service provider specializing in road freight and storage from the Black Forest has been responsible for the section of the supply chain from the manufacturer to the loading into the provided sea containers. The order includes the pickup of the hazardous goods from the manufacturer, interim storage in the new battery warehouse, packaging in specially manufactured transport boxes, as well as loading the containers including securing the cargo before transport to the Port of Hamburg. By the end of the year, a volume of 1,500 batteries is expected to be reached, significantly exceeding the originally planned quantity of 900 units.
Convinced from the very first conversation
“We were looking for a partner who is knowledgeable about LI batteries and operates a hazardous goods warehouse. Schuon convinced us from the very first conversation,” says Carsten Rommelfanger, Business Development Manager of Clasquin Germany GmbH. Just in March of this year, Schuon inaugurated a new hazardous materials warehouse for batteries in Wildberg and already accommodated the first goods for the logistics service provider Clasquin, which specializes in air and sea freight, in the same month.
Previously, Clasquin had received a request from an automobile manufacturer for the delivery of LI batteries from Germany to North America. A partner was needed for the domestic section who could not only store the batteries but also demonstrate the corresponding expertise in handling. “We came to Schuon because the company is known as a logistics provider for the automotive industry and was also familiar to us in connection with LI batteries,” Rommelfanger explains.
Collaboration for more than seven months now
Schuon has now been working for Clasquin for seven months, responsible for the transport of LI batteries from the manufacturer as well as the storage and handling until the overseas containers are ready at their own warehouse. They are securely stored there until the sea containers are ready for shipping after five to seven days. The order also includes properly packaging the batteries in specially produced wooden overseas boxes before they are loaded into the containers and secured according to regulations. This way, Schuon’s trained personnel provide all services for Clasquin from a single source. Clasquin organizes the customs declaration, the further transport by rail to Hamburg, and then by ship to the automobile manufacturer overseas.
More volume despite Corona
Since the beginning of the collaboration, the project has already evolved further. Despite volume fluctuations due to Corona throughout the year, the quantity of batteries to be transported has been revised upwards from 900 to an expected 1,500 by the end of the year. In addition, Schuon expanded the processes in goods receipt and dispatch to include additional steps such as another scanning process. “We experience Schuon as a reliable, flexible, and competent partner and want to continue to rely on the company,” Rommelfanger adds.
