Apr 16, 2026 at 1:12 PMThe Rhineland logistics service provider RheinCargo has optimized the registration procedures for incoming and outgoing inland vessels at its port locations. From now on, skippers can easily and quickly register via clearly visible QR codes at the port entrances. This measure aims to simplify the registration process while complying with the legal requirements of the General Port Regulation (AHVO).
Optimization of Registration Processes
The changes are based on the existing registration obligation according to § 11 ff. AHVO and aim to ensure safety in port operations as well as orderly traffic management. Through complete and timely notifications, berths, handling capacities, and traffic flows can be better planned, contributing to the avoidance of bottlenecks. RheinCargo is also obligated to forward the reported data to the relevant authorities.
The crews of incoming inland vessels can now register directly via the QR codes without additional organizational effort. In addition to this new option, registration via the RheinCargo website and a central registration link remains available. The new regulations apply to the port locations of Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf-Reisholz, Neuss, and Cologne-Niehl I and II.
Lukas Klippel, Head of Ports at RheinCargo, explains: “With the new registration procedure, we are consciously implementing an existing legal requirement in a simple, digital, and practical manner. Our goal is to make the reporting process for inland navigation as uncomplicated as possible while simultaneously improving safety, transparency, and predictability in port operations.”
Changes to the Fee Structure
As part of the redesign of the registration procedure, the fee structure for port usage has also been reviewed. Based on § 119 of the NRW State Water Act, a new price list for port charges and service fees has been established. This adjustment only affects the port fees, while the bank fees remain unchanged. There are no additional costs for handling activities and port users, as lay times directly associated with handling processes are exempt from the corresponding fees.
RheinCargo’s measures aim to reconcile legal requirements, operational demands, and the interests of port users. The complete price list, which has been valid since April 1, 2026, as well as further information on the implementation of the registration obligation, is available on the company website www.rheincargo.com.
