Mar 6, 2026 at 9:28 AMThe Kögel Trailer GmbH has developed a new trailer specifically designed for use with emission-free trucks. The e-optimized Kögel Light Plus is based on the proven Kögel Light Plus and features a lightweight construction that allows for a higher payload and reduces fuel consumption. This trailer is suitable for all brands of electric tractors and can be used in various industries.
With the increasing prevalence of emission-free trucks in Europe, EU Directive 96/53/EC is gaining importance. This directive allows for an increase in the maximum permissible total weight for e-tractors by up to 2 tons to compensate for the additional weight of the batteries. However, existing weight and axle load limits must still be adhered to, which can pose challenges in practice. In particular, the additional weight of the batteries can lead to exceeding the permissible rear axle loads if the weight is not evenly distributed.
The EU directive permits a total train weight of up to 42 tons for e-tractors, while the limit for diesel drives is set at 40 tons. However, the permissible load on the drive axle remains at a maximum of 11.5 tons. When combined with a standard semi-trailer, this can result in the drive axle being overloaded, which reduces the available payload of the trailer. Vehicle manufacturers are therefore faced with the challenge of integrating the additional weight of electric drives into the axle load distribution without exceeding legal limits.
Innovative Solution for Transport Companies
The e-optimized Kögel Light Plus offers a solution to these challenges. By shortening the wheelbase from the kingpin to the first trailer axle by 300 mm, the pressure on the drive axle of the tractor is reduced by up to 2 tons compared to a standard tarpaulin vehicle. This helps to avoid overloading the drive axle. Additionally, the short axle distance ensures that tire wear during cornering is not increased, and the trailer’s tracking behavior remains optimal in both loaded and unloaded conditions.
Transport operators using an e-truck with a standard trailer can expect a maximum payload of around 20 tons. With the e-optimized Kögel Light Plus, depending on the type of e-tractor, an additional payload of up to 4 tons can be achieved. In combination with a dynamic wheelbase adjustment system, the payload can be increased by another ton, allowing the maximum permissible total train weight of 42 tons to be fully utilized.
