May 5, 2020 at 9:25 PMAn accident occurred at Liebherr-MCCtec in Rostock on May 2, 2020, during a standard industry test series with the offshore heavy-lift crane HLC 295000 in the Rostock Overseas Port. Two injured individuals had to be hospitalized.
(Rostock) A serious accident occurred during an overload test of the offshore crane HLC 295000 of Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH, resulting in two injured persons requiring hospital treatment. Ten other individuals were treated on-site by paramedics.
“We wish the injured all the best and hope for a quick and complete recovery,” says Leopold Berthold, Managing Director of Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH. “Given the extent of the damage, we are especially grateful that there were no further injuries. Our priority is currently to provide comprehensive support to the investigating authorities to contribute to a swift clarification of the accident,” Berthold adds.
At this point in the investigation, the responsible authorities and experts unanimously assume that a broken crane hook is the cause of the accident. Why the hook could not withstand the load is still unclear in the current phase of the investigation. The development and manufacture of the crane hook were outsourced to an external supplier. Therefore, a design or production error of the Liebherr crane can be ruled out.
The overload test for the HLC 295000 was designed for a load case of 5,500 tons. The lift was supposed to be performed by lifting a barge. An overload test is a standard industry procedure in which the crane is tested to its maximum load capacity. The facts known today suggest that the incident occurred at a load of around 2,600 tons, triggering a chain reaction that led to the accident.
As of now, the accident has no impact on the ongoing operations of Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock GmbH. Initial estimates indicate that the damage amounts to a high double-digit million figure.
