Lufthansa Cargo has celebrated the completion of the first construction phase of its infrastructure project „LCCevo“ at Frankfurt Airport. This phase, referred to as ALPHA, represents a significant step in the comprehensive modernization of the Frankfurt cargo center. With a total investment of 600 million EUR, the Lufthansa Cargo Center is set to be transformed into one of the most modern air freight centers in Europe by 2030. The construction work spans an area of approximately 80,000 m\u00b2, equivalent to about 11 football fields, and takes place around the clock during ongoing operations.<\/p>\n

Technological Innovations for Efficiency Enhancement<\/h3>\n

At the heart of the new infrastructure are intelligent material flow and conveyor systems that seamlessly connect all process steps. The facilities include a fully automated high-bay warehouse with a height of 42 m and nearly 3,000 storage spaces for large cargo pallets. Additionally, a modern automated pallet storage facility for temperature-sensitive and specialized shipments will be established. The high-bay warehouse will be capable of enabling more than 300 storage and retrieval operations per hour, effectively doubling capacity.<\/p>\n

Ashwin Bhat, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo, commented on the progress: „With the launch of phase ALPHA, a vision becomes reality. LCCevo is one of the most significant investments in the history of our company and a clear commitment to Frankfurt as an air freight hub.“ He emphasized the necessity of investing in the long-term viability of the location to meet the demands of global markets.<\/p>\n

Commitment to Frankfurt as an Air Freight Hub<\/h3>\n

Dr. Michael Niggemann, member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, highlighted that the investment in the new LCCevo air freight center represents an important contribution to strengthening the leading position in the air freight business. „The close integration of passenger and cargo operations is a key strength of the Lufthansa Group,“ said Niggemann. This investment is another step into the future of the successful business model and strengthens Frankfurt as one of the most important international hubs.<\/p>\n

Kaweh Mansoori, Hessian Minister for Economic Affairs and Transport, emphasized the central role of Frankfurt Airport in European air freight logistics. „Modern infrastructure is the foundation for growth, high-quality jobs, and sustainable value creation,“ said Mansoori, referring to the support of the project by the Hessian Ministry of Economic Affairs.<\/p>\n

Stefan Schnorr, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport, added that air freight is indispensable for many key industries in Germany. „Reliable, safe, and fast access to international markets is crucial,“ said Schnorr. He welcomed the Lufthansa Group’s commitment to Germany as an air freight hub.<\/p>\n

Outlook for the Future<\/h3>\n

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Lufthansa Group, not only is there a look back at history, but also a focus on the future. With LCCevo, Lufthansa Cargo lays an important foundation for the coming decades. In the next few years, construction phases BRAVO and CHARLIE will follow, further modernizing the Lufthansa Cargo Center by 2030. In addition to efficiency and performance, sustainability will also play a central role. Plans include photovoltaic systems on approximately 19,000 m\u00b2 of roof area, as well as modern building technologies and intelligent heat recovery systems to reduce energy consumption and emissions.<\/p>\n
