Compas has commissioned a new mobile harbor crane of the type LHM 600 at its terminal in Cartagena to increase container handling capacities. The crane, which offers a reach of 61 meters and a lifting capacity of 104 tons, enables the processing of larger container ships and supports twin-lift operations. Its mobile design allows the crane to be flexibly relocated between different berths, which is of great importance for a multipurpose terminal that handles containers, bulk goods, project cargo, and refrigerated goods.<\/p>\n

Strategic Importance of the Terminal<\/h3>\n

The terminal in Cartagena is considered one of the most important hubs for national and international trade in Colombia. It combines various types of handling and features specialized infrastructure, including certified cold storage facilities and non-invasive inspection systems capable of scanning up to 150 containers per hour. The deployment of the new crane is expected to enhance efficiency in handling diverse requirements without compromising safety or throughput.<\/p>\n

A representative from Compas emphasized that the investment in the new crane will strengthen the company’s ability to serve shipping lines and shippers in light of the growing trade volume. „By expanding handling capacities within our existing infrastructure, we are solidifying Cartagena’s role as a stable gateway for Colombian foreign trade,“ he stated.<\/p>\n

Optimization of Operational Processes<\/h3>\n

The commissioning of the LHM 600 is also intended to improve ship handling during peak times and reduce operational bottlenecks. This contributes to a smooth flow of cargo in the region. At the port of Cartagena, various types of cargo are processed simultaneously at four berths, requiring precise coordination of operations. The new crane increases planning reliability, as it allows for the handling of larger containers without disrupting the parallel flow of cargo.<\/p>\n

The crane is serviced by Liebherr’s regional sales and service organization, ensuring access to technical expertise and spare parts. This guarantees high availability of the crane and supports the continuous operation of the terminal.<\/p>\n

Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales Mobile Harbor Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock, stated that the goal is to deliver equipment that integrates into complex port environments and enables reliable performance. In Cartagena, this means ensuring flexible container handling while considering the operational requirements of a multipurpose terminal.<\/p>\n

For Colombia, where ports play a central role as trade hubs and economic stabilizers, gradual improvements to existing terminals often provide significant long-term benefits.
