The Austrian Post AG today celebrated the groundbreaking for the expansion of its logistics center in Wals-Siezenheim. With an investment of EUR 55 million, the existing logistics center will be expanded and modernized to increase sorting capacity to up to 24,000 packages per hour. This represents a threefold increase in current capacities. The renovation will take place during ongoing operations and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.<\/p>\n

Economic Significance of the Project<\/h3>\n

Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Federal Minister for Economy, Energy and Tourism, emphasized the importance of this investment for Austria’s economic location. He stated that modern and reliable logistics are essential for a strong location. Karoline Edtstadler, Governor of Salzburg, added that the project not only secures jobs but also modernizes infrastructure and supports employees through innovative automation solutions.<\/p>\n

Walter Oblin, General Director of the Austrian Post AG, described the expansion as an important step within the nationwide investment program. He highlighted that the investment strengthens not only the Salzburg location but also improves the entire logistics network of the Post. Peter Umundum, Deputy General Director and Board Member for Parcel & Logistics, explained the technological innovations that accompany the expansion. This includes the use of a matrix sorter, which will be used for the first time in Europe and allows for high flexibility in sorting packages.<\/p>\n

Technological Innovations and Sustainability<\/h3>\n

The Salzburg logistics center, which has been in operation for over 25 years, will be adapted to meet increased demands through the renovation. Part of the existing buildings will be demolished to make way for a new basement and ground floor. The new sorting facilities will be complemented by a hybrid conveyor system specifically designed for different package sizes.<\/p>\n

As part of the project, the Austrian Post also places great emphasis on sustainability. Care will be taken not to seal new areas but to optimally utilize the existing site of approximately 40,000 m\u00b2. The ecological measures include a thermal renovation of the existing buildings, the construction of a photovoltaic system with a capacity of 880 kW peak, and the greening of roofs and facades.<\/p>\n

With these measures, the Austrian Post aims not only to increase the efficiency of its logistics but also to demonstrate responsible resource management.<\/p>\n
