L\u00f6dige Industries has introduced a new software module called „Cargo Direct,“ aimed at optimizing operations in air freight terminals. In light of the increasing pressure from growing volumes, labor shortages, and rising process complexity, it has become crucial for terminals to position themselves as digitally connected performance nodes within airline and freight forwarding networks. „Cargo Direct“ links air waybill (AWB) data in real-time with all available terminal resources to enhance efficiency.<\/p>\n

Optimization of Operations<\/h3>\n

By reducing unnecessary movements and synchronizing handling resources with shipment priorities, „Cargo Direct“ aims to increase the throughput performance of terminals. This leads to more stable operations during peak times and allows for a more efficient use of existing infrastructure. Initial implementations show that optimized process flows can shorten processing times and improve resource utilization without requiring additional infrastructure.<\/p>\n

„Cargo Direct“ offers a structured, system-supported process automation that enables large terminals to achieve the transparency and responsiveness of smaller facilities. The system consolidates data on shipments, special handling codes, terminal layouts, and the availability of equipment and personnel resources into a continuously updated activity plan. Instead of merely logging user actions, the system actively determines the next optimal process step for each cargo.<\/p>\n

The identification of each cargo, whether a ULD, an internal pallet, or a single package, is done through handheld scanners connected via Wi-Fi or 5G. „Cargo Direct“ automatically directs the cargo to the next optimal destination, such as a storage location, an inspection station, or an assembly workstation. User interaction is reduced to a structured „Scan and Confirm“ workflow, while exceptions such as damaged cargo or partial deliveries are managed within the system logic.<\/p>\n

Efficiency Increase through Process Automation<\/h3>\n

The strategies for storage and pickup are dynamically optimized to minimize travel distances and reduce waiting times at workstations. Ground operations also benefit from early assignment of doors and gates based on the content of shipments, layout constraints, and operational priorities. Additional data sources, such as volume and weight information captured through intelligent gates with 3D scanning, can be integrated to improve ULD assembly density and increase the overall capacity of the terminal.<\/p>\n

Despite the widespread automation of equipment in the industry, many terminals still rely heavily on manual decisions and individual experiences. Cargo Direct bridges the gap between mechanical automation and true process automation, thereby reducing operational variability and enhancing predictability at the hub level.<\/p>\n

„Cargo Direct“ is offered as a subscription-based model per AWB and is continuously improved through regular updates. This creates a robust data foundation for future AI-driven optimizations.<\/p>\n
