Schaeffler has initiated the construction of a highly automated distribution center in Katowice, Poland, in collaboration with SSI Sch\u00e4fer. The new logistics center aims to enhance efficiency and flexibility in delivering to customers worldwide. Schaeffler, a company with over 75 years of experience in the automotive and mechanical engineering industries, offers tailored repair and service solutions in its Vehicle Lifetime Solutions division.<\/p>\n

The implementation of the project is taking place in close cooperation with the companies RO-BER, SWAN, and DS AUTOMOTION, all of which belong to the SSI Sch\u00e4fer Group. This partnership is based on a long-standing collaboration that has already led to the realization of one of the most modern distribution centers in Europe in Kitzingen.<\/p>\n

Technological Integration for Optimized Processes<\/h3>\n

The distribution center in Katowice will be equipped with a variety of technologies, including Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR), Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), and modern conveyor technology. These technologies are intended to ensure a smooth flow of materials, which is particularly challenging due to the installation in a building with a height of only 12 meters. SSI Sch\u00e4fer has developed a solution that optimally utilizes the available space and allows for the expansion with additional AMR or AGV units.<\/p>\n

Dr. J\u00f6rg Zellerhoff, Warehouse Engineering Logistics Techn. at Schaeffler Group, emphasizes the importance of combining efficiency and flexibility: \u201cFor us, it was crucial to combine the highest efficiency with maximum flexibility. The new distribution center enables us to respond particularly quickly to changing market demands.\u201d<\/p>\n

Automated Systems for Efficient Storage<\/h3>\n

The centerpiece of the new center is an automated small parts warehouse with over 120,000 storage locations. Here, 55 RackBots and 116 RunBots are deployed. The RackBots are responsible for the autonomous storage and retrieval of containers, while the RunBots connect to the container conveyor technology. An intelligent robotic cell in the destacking area automates the depalletizing of small load carriers (KLTs) and prepares empty pallets for further transport. This robotic technology is intended to relieve employees from physically demanding tasks.<\/p>\n

The automated guided vehicles supplied by DS AUTOMOTION play a central role in the logistics of the new center. They are flexible and can be adapted to various applications to ensure seamless integration into the warehouse organization.<\/p>\n

Intelligent Software for Optimal Control<\/h3>\n

For the control of the automated warehouse, Schaeffler relies on SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM). The implementation takes place in close collaboration between the expert teams from Schaeffler and SWAN GmbH. While Schaeffler develops the specific business logic in the warehouse management system, SWAN ensures intelligent material flow control. A central information platform, the WAMAS Control Center, monitors the entire facility, coordinates material flows, and provides important key figures for optimization.<\/p>\n

Dr. Zellerhoff describes the new facility as an example of modern logistics: \u201cHere we demonstrate how state-of-the-art technologies can be integrated into a harmonious overall system.\u201d The distribution center in Katowice will thus be an essential part of Schaeffler’s global logistics strategy and another step in the partnership with SSI Sch\u00e4fer.<\/p>\n
