The transport and logistics associations organized within the Alpentransit working group have urged the European Commission to promptly initiate negotiations with Austria and neighboring countries to improve the traffic situation at the Brenner in the short term. This demand was articulated during an exchange with the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) of the European Commission, which also included Jens Gieseke, a member of the European Parliament.<\/p>\n
The discussion centered on the ongoing difficulties on the Brenner route, particularly the single-lane traffic management at the Lueg Bridge. This situation is further exacerbated by Tyrol’s anti-transit measures, which have significant impacts on road freight transport and the European internal market. The Alpentransit working group emphasized the necessity of initiating trilateral negotiations to find short-term solutions. One possible measure could be the flexibilization of the night driving ban as well as other truck driving bans for environmentally friendly and quiet vehicles to alleviate traffic congestion.<\/p>\n
The current challenges in Brenner transit lead to a significant productivity loss for the affected transport companies, averaging 30%. On days with staggered traffic management, this loss can even exceed 50%. In light of these massive problems and the uncertain duration of the ongoing proceedings before the European Court of Justice (ECJ) regarding Italy’s lawsuit against Tyrol’s measures, the Alpentransit working group demands a swift improvement of the traffic situation through negotiations.<\/p>\n
DG MOVE and Jens Gieseke have assured the Alpentransit working group of their support in addressing the transit issues in Tyrol. The working group includes, in addition to the Federal Association of Goods Transport and Logistics (BGL), the road transport associations AIS\u00d6 (Austria), FNTR (France), ITD (Denmark), NLA (Denmark, Sweden, Norway), TLN (Netherlands), as well as the global association IRU.<\/p>\n
