The coalition government, with backing from Brussels, has further developed the truck toll in line with climate protection goals and decided on an increase effective December 1, 2023.<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

(Berlin) THE FREIGHT RAILWAYS support this step, which moves towards cost transparency between trucks and rail. “The reduction of environmentally harmful subsidies has become even more important, especially with the KTF ruling from the Federal Constitutional Court behind us. We are pleased that the government, with this law, is encouraging both the shipping economy and the transport sector to look for environmentally friendly alternatives to diesel trucks, while also financing the improvement of rail infrastructure with part of the additional revenue. It\u2019s a win-win situation for the economy, like something out of a storybook,” comments Ludolf Kerkeling, Chairman of the Board of THE FREIGHT RAILWAYS.<\/p>\n

Funds Also for Rail Infrastructure<\/h5>\n

This ends the financing cycle for roads and a competition-distorting indirect subsidy \u2013 at least on the federal highways. In the future, both (German and foreign) trucks will have to pay a partial toll rate for their CO2<\/sub> emissions. The additional revenues will no longer solely lead to more road construction but will also benefit the urgently needed renovation and expansion of rail infrastructure. This is important to strengthen the capacity and quality of the even more energy-efficient and climate-friendly rail, alongside providing an incentive for low-CO2<\/sub> truck drives.<\/p>\n

Loading Facilities Need to Be Expanded<\/h5>\n

Kerkeling: “We expect even more inquiries from shippers. Switching to rail will increasingly offer price advantages. To ensure the significantly higher performance of the electric intermodal logistics chain of the future, loading facilities and routes must be reliably expanded to make the transition easy for transport customers.”<\/p>\n
