The Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) has closely examined the development of short sea shipping in German seaports in 2022 on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). Accordingly, the cargo throughput of German ports in short sea shipping decreased from around 180.3 million tons in 2021 by approximately 8.3 percent to the lowest value in the last ten years at around 165.5 million tons in 2022 (excluding the self-weights of the cargo carriers).<\/h5>\n

(K\u00f6ln) The share of short sea shipping in the total seaborne cargo throughput of German seaports fell during the same period from around 62.5 percent to approximately 59.3 percent. The cargo throughput in short sea shipping was significantly influenced by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation, as well as other measures to restrict trade and unsanctioned behavior by market participants, led to significant declines in throughput in maritime transport with the Russian Federation. Ongoing frictions in global supply chains and production declines in energy-intensive industries also hindered seaborne cargo throughput. The most significant partner countries for German seaports in short sea shipping in 2022 were Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark.<\/p>\n

The container throughput of German seaports in short sea shipping decreased in 2022 compared to the previous year by around 11.5 percent to approximately 5.15 million TEU. This was also the lowest value in the last 10 years. The most significant partner countries for German container ports in short sea shipping in 2022 were Poland, Sweden, Finland, and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

Container Traffic with Russia Decreased by 74 Percent<\/h5>\n

Container traffic with the Russian Federation fell by approximately 74.0 percent to around 0.17 million TEU during the comparison period. The vehicle throughput of German seaports in RoRo traffic decreased in 2022 compared to 2021 by about 1.3 percent to around 2.27 million units. The majority of vehicle throughput was accounted for by the German Baltic Sea ports.<\/p>\n
