Logistics service provider DSV is testing an eTrailer in Germany for the first time. According to the manufacturer Trailer Dynamics, the innovative semi-trailer system can save an average of 40 percent fuel, depending on the specific application. During a one-day test drive, it was verified that the use of eTrailers can make a significant contribution to the long-term reduction of CO2 emissions in land transport.<\/strong><\/h5>\n

(Bremen\/Aachen) To promote the decarbonization of land transport, DSV Road tested an eTrailer from the manufacturer Trailer Dynamics at the beginning of August. An eTrailer is a semi-trailer equipped with an electric drive system. This system does not push but supports the tractor unit in various topographies and driving modes, such as starting, accelerating, and braking. With the development of the electrified tractor unit, the Eschweiler company aims to significantly reduce fuel consumption for diesel truck transports or substantially increase the range of battery-electric tractor units.<\/p>\n

On a route of 360 km, DSV tested the fuel consumption of the eTrailer under real conditions in direct comparison with a conventional trailer \u2013 both with an eleven-ton payload. On the way from Krefeld to Westerkappeln and back, the consumption levels were checked every ten kilometers. As a result of the test drive, there was a 48.24 percent diesel saving of the tractor unit in combination with the eTrailer. Using green electricity, this would amount to a savings of 100 kg of CO2.<\/p>\n

Promising test results<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Peter Fog-Petersen, Managing Director of DSV Road GmbH, accompanied the test: “About 10 percent of energy-related greenhouse gases are caused by trucks in global road traffic. As a global transport and logistics service provider, we are aware of our responsibility and do not want to miss any opportunity to reduce emissions through new technologies like the eTrailer.”<\/p>\n

Flemming Steiness, Senior Director of ‘Global Equipment Services’ at DSV Road Holding NV, adds: “The results of the test are absolutely promising. In the next step, we look forward to testing the technology for two weeks. This phase of the project will take place at DSV with an eTrailer from Trailer Dynamics after European approval. This will allow us not only to test the CO2 savings over a longer period but also to gain practical experience in handling eTrailers.”<\/p>\n

Abdullah Jaber, CEO of Trailer Dynamics, is also pleased with the test drive: “The results, the functionally safe real-time control of the eTrailer, and the successful verification of the digital performance simulation models of Trailer Dynamics in combination with our eTrailer in the real field test together with DSV confirm the high level of development of the hardware and software components of the eTrailer.”<\/p>\n

Sustainable logistics<\/strong><\/h5>\n

In 2021, DSV introduced Green Logistics. This is an ambitious package of green solutions ranging from CO2 reporting and strategic supply chain optimization to emissions compensation and sustainable fuel offerings. Each solution aims to reduce the emissions of DSV’s customers and DSV’s scope 3 emissions for subcontracted transport. The Danish logistics company has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Furthermore, DSV has set short-term sustainability goals for 2030, including a 50 percent reduction in direct emissions and purchased energy carriers, as well as a 30 percent reduction in indirect emissions from the value chain.<\/p>\n
