At the end of October, two teams from the project “Digital Testbed Air Cargo” involving the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML participated in and won the ONE Record Hackathon organized by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in Toronto, Canada. The participants were recognized for innovative solutions using the ONE Record data standard along the air cargo transport chain.<\/h5>\n

(Dortmund) As part of the ONE Record initiative in air cargo logistics, the eleven participating teams had to develop and present new solutions within 28 hours at the IATA ONE Record Hackathon in Toronto from October 21 to 23, 2022. The two German teams from the Air Cargo Community received the “Developer” award, which is considered the most technically demanding category, and the “PayCargo” award. Each prize is endowed with $2,000. The teams consisted of representatives from Fraunhofer IML, Lufthansa Cargo, CHI Germany, and the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences.<\/p>\n

ONE Record is an initiative in air cargo logistics aimed at breaking down data silos along the transport chain and simplifying collaboration across company boundaries with standardized data formats. Instead of creating, sending, and passing around documents, each actor provides their data in a standardized manner over the internet through modern interfaces and grants access to requesting companies. This not only reduces the ecological footprint but also promotes a stronger integration of business processes between companies.<\/p>\n

Tracking Solution Developed Under Extreme Time Pressure<\/h5>\n

Under enormous time pressure, the teams demonstrated their skills in software development, app and web application design, project management, and video shooting and editing, developing innovative ONE Record-based technologies. For the “Developer” award, they created a solution for tracking cargo shipments in warehouses and distribution centers that utilizes Apple Air Tags. The uniqueness of this method lies in its location-independent data collection, meaning the Bluetooth signals from the Air Tags serve as anchor points for automatic localization and can later be retrieved automatically in an interactive dashboard, including a map, and shared with all stakeholders via ONE Record. The second prize was awarded for an intelligent data checker. This tool automatically searches along the ONE Record data stream of the supply chain for issues related to data protection and quality and makes corresponding changes (e.g., anonymization) using a trained artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

Digitizing Processes Along Air Cargo<\/h5>\n

For over a year, the participating teams have been collaborating on the project “Digital Testbed Air Cargo,” funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). Industry and academia across Germany are working to digitize processes along the air cargo transport chain to ensure better connectivity. Due to the great success of the “Digital Testbed Air Cargo,” researchers from Fraunhofer IML presented the project, among others, together with Oliver Luksic, Parliamentary State Secretary at the BMDV, at the Air Cargo Forum of Transport Logistics Americas on November 8, 2022, in Miami.<\/p>\n

The ONE Record Hackathon 2023 will be hosted by the “Digital Testbed Air Cargo” with Lufthansa Cargo as the host from June 23 to 25, 2023, in Seeheim.<\/p>\n
