{"id":58762,"date":"2022-09-29T07:48:54","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T05:48:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brand-architecture.at\/2022\/09\/29\/the-supply-chain-innovation-day-impressed-with-quality\/"},"modified":"2022-09-29T07:48:54","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T05:48:54","slug":"the-supply-chain-innovation-day-impressed-with-quality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loginfo24.com\/en\/2022\/09\/29\/the-supply-chain-innovation-day-impressed-with-quality\/","title":{"rendered":"The Supply Chain Innovation Day Impressed with Quality"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><strong>The Supply Chain Innovation Day 2022 of the Institute for Supply Chain Management at the University of St. Gallen was once again impressive this year, offering participants a high-quality and diverse program under the motto &#8220;Supply Chains Under Constant Stress &#8211; Mastering Disruptions with Innovations.&#8221; Keynote speakers included Nils Haupt from Hapag-Lloyd, Ingo Steinkr\u00fcger from the Interroll Group, and Robert Heinzer from Victorinox.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>(St. Gallen\/Rorschach) Supply chain issues, high energy prices, or a shortage of skilled workers are certainly no longer problems unknown in logistics. This is evident daily among all players in logistics and supply.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is rare to receive so much input and reports from experts from various sectors of the industry in one day, as was the case at the Supply Chain Innovation Day last Tuesday at the W\u00fcrth House in Rorschach. In the beautiful location, situated right on the shores of Lake Constance, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang St\u00f6lzle and Prof. Dr. Erik Hofmann, the two heads of the organizing Institute for Supply Chain Management at the University of St. Gallen, welcomed the numerous guests. They also guided the program and moderated some of the sessions.<\/p>\n<p>After a greeting from the host, the W\u00fcrth Group, represented by Manuel Kn\u00f6pfli, Managing Director of W\u00fcrth Logistics AG, eight start-ups presented their innovations under the moderation of Sallar Faridi and introduced their solutions to the audience. Digitalization was at the forefront for all.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Shipping Companies as Winners of the Crisis &#8211; The End of the Boom in Sight<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The supply chain issues and the resulting scarcity of shipping space and containers do not only produce losers, as was made clear in the presentation by keynote speaker Nils Haupt, Senior Director Corporate Communications at Hapag-Lloyd. It wasn&#8217;t long ago that the German flagship shipping company was severely affected. Logistics entrepreneur Klaus-Michael K\u00fchne stepped in to save the day and has watched profits grow steadily over the last three years.<\/p>\n<p>Problems also arise from the transit times, particularly the waiting times in front of ports, which cause headaches. At Hapag-Lloyd, one does not count in days, but in weeks. However, Nils Haupt also clearly pointed out that the fat years are coming to an end, and there is a risk of overcapacity again starting in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>[caption id=&#8221;attachment_21165&#8243; align=&#8221;alignnone&#8221; width=&#8221;938&#8243;&gt;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21165 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/loginfo24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/12\/SCID_7-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"938\" height=\"1024\" \/> Nils Haupt described the current situation of Hapag-Lloyd with a look into the future<\/caption>\n<h5><strong>Inland Ports, Inland Shipping, and Intermodal Operators Under Pressure<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The delays of shipping companies also affect hinterland traffic. Representatives from ports and port operations (Swiss Rhine Ports, bayernhafen, Rhenus\/Contargo, and Ultra Brag) discussed the concerns of inland shipping, just as representatives from Swiss railways and intermodal operators (SBB Cargo, BLS Cargo, and Hupac) discussed the worries and problems of the railways.<\/p>\n<p>Once the container is finally available in the port, things cannot move quickly enough. Additionally, inland shipping is also suffering from low water levels and high energy costs. The latter is also felt by the railways and operators.<\/p>\n<p>All involved demonstrate a high degree of flexibility. As Michail Stahlhut, CEO of Hupac, said: &#8220;Never has the rail been as flexible as it is today.&#8221; This applies to all participants and gives hope for the future that these sustainable modes of transport will live up to their reputation.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>  <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>[caption id=&#8221;attachment_21167&#8243; align=&#8221;alignnone&#8221; width=&#8221;1214&#8243;&gt;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21167 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/loginfo24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/12\/SCID_10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1214\" height=\"849\" \/> Inland ports and port service providers discussed the current situation<\/caption>\n<h5><strong>  <\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Stay Calm and Build Resilience<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In further sessions, there was a debate on whether to remain calm during crises or whether action is necessary. Valuable practical tips were shared. Discussions also covered the Supply Chain Act and risk management.<\/p>\n<p>The composition of the discussion participants was well mixed. Representatives from industry and trade discussed topics with logistics service providers.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Energy Crisis Also Offers Opportunities for Sustainability<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>As another keynote speaker, Ingo Steinkr\u00fcger, CEO of the Interroll Group, spoke about &#8220;More Sustainability Through Innovative Intralogistics.&#8221; Intralogistics was driven during the crisis, and investments in the automation of processes and energy efficiency have been enormous in recent years. This area of logistics is also affected by supply crises. Material procurement has become cumbersome.<\/p>\n<p>In further sessions, sustainability was explored in depth. Discussions included green hydrogen as a future solution in road transport, and a solutions arena showcased realized sustainability concepts.<\/p>\n<p>[caption id=&#8221;attachment_21168&#8243; align=&#8221;alignnone&#8221; width=&#8221;1024&#8243;&gt;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21168 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/loginfo24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/12\/SCID_11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"548\" \/> Will hydrogen establish itself as a sustainable fuel?<\/caption>\n<h5><strong>Approaches to Stability in Crisis Times and Skilled Labor Shortage<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In a brilliant keynote speech, Robert Heinzer, Chief Human Resource Officer of Victorinox AG (yes, the one with the Swiss Army Knife), spoke about &#8220;What Do Swiss-Made Pocket Knives Have to Do with Resilience? Leadership Impulses for Supply Chain Managers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This example is impressive, especially because the owner family Elsener has prioritized the well-being of employees since the company&#8217;s inception. The company has been transferred into a foundation by the heirs. Profits thus do not flow into the owners&#8217; pockets but back into the company.<\/p>\n<p>In times of crisis, more is invested counter-cyclically, whether in innovation, sales, or infrastructure.
