Volvo Trucks introduces a range of new features that improve safety and driving behavior, supporting precise handling in tight spaces and on bumpy or slippery roads, such as construction sites. “Thanks to several intelligent updates to the I-Shift transmission, we have managed to provide a series of new features that enhance drivability, safety, and comfort,” says P\u00e4r Bergstrand, Heavy Duty Transmission Manager at Volvo Trucks.<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The Terrain Brake is a new, unique solution for driving at low speeds in challenging and uneven terrain. It allows for easy and safe maneuvering of the truck. The Terrain Brake enables slow and controlled passage over an obstacle, such as a larger stone or a curb. A hasty switch from the accelerator to the brake is not necessary, as the new Terrain Brake automatically prevents rapid rolling off the obstacle. The vehicle maintains its position, and precise navigation off the obstacle is controlled via the accelerator pedal.<\/p>\n

“The Terrain Brake is ideal for use in off-road conditions, such as on construction sites, in quarries, or on uneven roads. It can also be useful when maneuvering in cities and crossing speed bumps and curbs. Regardless of the situation, it gives drivers more control, making work safer and easier,” says P\u00e4r Bergstrand.<\/p>\n

Change Direction<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Change Direction is another solution that facilitates maneuvering a truck at low speeds. Situations such as turning in tight spaces or reversing to a loading dock typically require short, precise movements, where drivers switch between the brake and accelerator pedals. Instead of applying the brake, drivers can now engage reverse gear while the truck is still rolling forward. The new feature then automatically brings the vehicle to a stop and subsequently moves it backward while drivers simply keep the accelerator pressed.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Active Grip Control<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Active Grip Control is a feature that significantly improves stability and acceleration on slippery surfaces. When the truck starts to skid, the vehicle control can intelligently respond to the road surface thanks to multiple sensors, helping drivers stay on the road. The new feature is also designed to reduce the risk of tipping over (“knife-edge effect”) and oversteering in unladen vehicles.<\/p>\n

Cruise Control<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Volvo Trucks has also revamped the cruise control, allowing it to be activated at speeds as low as 4 km\/h, or even at 2 km\/h when used with the optional crawler gears.<\/p>\n

“I am really proud that we have managed to develop so many useful features that not only improve driving on construction sites but are also helpful in many other situations, such as transporting wood and driving in cities,” summarizes P\u00e4r Bergstrand.<\/p>\n

  • The Terrain Brake is an option for Volvo trucks with a driven front axle and the Volvo FH16.<\/li>\n
  • Change Direction is an option for all Volvo FH, Volvo FM, and Volvo FMX.<\/li>\n
  • Active Grip Control is standard equipment on all heavy Volvo trucks with electric drivetrains and, with few exceptions, all heavy trucks with Euro-6 engines.<\/li>\n
  • The updated cruise control is standard equipment on all heavy Volvo trucks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
