Kay Morschheuser receives the European Safety Prize for Commercial Vehicles 2020. Morschheuser led the commercial vehicle accident analyses and safety strategies at Daimler Truck. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place next year, provided the Corona pandemic allows it.<\/p>\n

(Stuttgart) Kay Morschheuser is awarded the European Safety Prize for Commercial Vehicles 2020. The long-time head of commercial vehicle accident analyses and safety strategies at Daimler will be honored jointly by the European Association for Accident Research and Accident Analysis (EVU), the German Road Safety Council (DVR), and the expert organization DEKRA. An official award ceremony is planned for next year, depending on the situation regarding the Corona pandemic.<\/p>\n

Contributions to Accident Research and Safety<\/h5>\n

“We honor Kay Morschheuser at the end of his professional career for his exceptional contributions to the safety of commercial vehicles in the field of accident research over the past decades,” said EVU President J\u00f6rg Ahlgrimm. “The detailed analysis of real accidents forms a crucial basis for the development and refinement of safety systems in vehicles \u2013 by highlighting where action is needed. The development of safety systems such as emergency braking or turning assistants has been significantly influenced by the findings from the accident research conducted by Kay Morschheuser and his team. These systems save lives.”<\/p>\n

Kay Morschheuser studied mechanical engineering with a focus on automotive engineering in Hanover and worked in accident research at the Medical University of Hanover towards the end of his studies. After graduating in 1988, he began working at Mercedes-Benz AG as a test engineer in the field of safety investigations for commercial vehicles. In the 1990s, he focused on airbag development for trucks and conducted truck crash tests in this context. Since 1998, he has been responsible for accident analyses and safety strategies in the European truck development at Daimler. In this role, he contributed to various international road safety efforts concerning commercial vehicles. At the end of October 2020, he entered the passive phase of his partial retirement.<\/p>\n

Significant Progress in Road Safety for Commercial Vehicles<\/h5>\n

Clemens Klinke, member of the board of DEKRA SE, commented on the award: “In terms of road safety in the commercial vehicle sector, there have been significant advancements over the past decades. This is evidenced by a look at the accident statistics. Efforts must be maintained to ensure that this positive development continues. Kay Morschheuser has laid important foundations that will continue to have an impact. We honor these contributions with the European Safety Prize for Commercial Vehicles.”<\/p>\n

DVR President Prof. Dr. Walter Eichendorf also praised the award winner. “For more than 50 years, the DVR and its members have been actively working to further reduce accident numbers and mitigate the consequences of accidents. Our safety strategy ‘VISION ZERO’ guides us in this endeavor. The introduction of active and passive safety systems, often first in commercial vehicles, has contributed to significant accident reduction in the past and will continue to play an important role in enhancing safety on our roads in the future.”<\/p>\n
