Open letter from 32 associations to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the two chief negotiators Michel Barnier and David Frost. The associations want an agreement for the benefit of consumers and the economy on both sides. The negotiating parties are urged not to hinder ongoing traffic and transit traffic.<\/p>\n

(Frankfurt\/Main) The BGL, the IRU, and 30 other road transport associations and transport companies from across Europe are calling on the negotiators of the EU and the United Kingdom to reach a Brexit agreement for the benefit of consumers and the economy.<\/p>\n

In an open letter coordinated by the IRU to the two Brexit negotiators Michel Barnier and David Frost, as well as Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the signatories of the letter urged both parties to reach an agreement that protects the ongoing traffic of trucks between the EU and the United Kingdom and allows transit traffic through their respective territories without the introduction of transport permits and quota systems.<\/p>\n

Free Trade Agreement Would Support Supply Chains<\/strong><\/h5>\n

A free trade agreement between both sides would support supply chains and economies throughout the EU, as more than 2.3 million trucks travel between the EU and the United Kingdom each year.<\/p>\n

Commercial road freight transport has suffered greatly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual revenue loss for operators in the EU is estimated at \u20ac64 billion for freight transport in 2020. “Additional costs arising from the absence of an agreement between the United Kingdom and the EU by the end of the year would be another blow to businesses and must be avoided at all costs,” said BGL spokesman Prof. Dr. Dirk Engelhardt.<\/p>\n

Without a free trade agreement, European and British transport companies would face a patchwork of different national agreements, with higher costs, longer travel times, and a potential disruption of supply for all customers.<\/p>\n

Time is Running Out!<\/strong><\/h5>\n

“The European and British road transport industry calls on the negotiators to reach an agreement on future relations. Transparency is required regarding the new operating environment so that the industry has enough time to prepare for new regulations,” demands Dirk Engelhardt.<\/p>\n
