Fraport is committed to its climate protection goals at Frankfurt Airport despite the Corona crisis. The electricity supply from wind energy is planned. The share of green electricity from wind power alone is expected to be around 85 percent by 2025. The construction of a large-scale photovoltaic system at the cargo hall is underway.<\/p>\n

(Frankfurt) A large part of the electricity demand of Fraport AG at Frankfurt Airport is to come from wind energy in the future. This is the plan of the airport operator Fraport, which continues to implement its climate protection goals consistently. The company aims to agree with an operator of an offshore wind farm to purchase a minimum annual amount of green electricity starting no later than 2025. The necessary market announcement is being made today.<\/p>\n

“Even in the currently very difficult situation, we keep the challenge of climate protection firmly in view. From this wind energy project alone, we plan to source about 85 percent of our electricity demand at Frankfurt Airport from renewable sources starting in 2025,” emphasizes CEO Dr. Stefan Schulte. Fraport’s goal remains to source most of the electricity demand at Frankfurt Airport from renewable energies by 2030.<\/p>\n

Climate protection goals remain intact<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The use of renewable energies is a key component in achieving the self-imposed climate protection goals. Fraport aims to significantly reduce its CO2 emissions in Frankfurt from currently around 170,000 tons per year to 80,000 tons per year by 2030. By 2050, the company intends to be CO2-free, meaning it will emit no more emissions.<\/p>\n

As part of a “Power Purchase Agreement,” Fraport intends to agree with the operator of an offshore wind farm on a delivery quantity of up to 350 gigawatt hours of green electricity per year. “We want to promote renewable energies and are looking for a competent partner for this. With such a contract, we can plan securely for the future without having to engage in project realization ourselves,” explains Schulte.<\/p>\n

Solar energy at the airport<\/strong><\/h5>\n

At the same time, the company is focusing on generating electricity at the airport itself. Currently, the first large-scale photovoltaic system at Frankfurt Airport is being built on a new cargo hall in CargoCity South. This is expected to generate more than 1.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year. This would be enough to supply more than 450 households with four people for a year. Fraport is also committed to the construction of a photovoltaic system on the parking garage of the new Terminal 3.<\/p>\n

With these and other measures, the share of green electricity at Frankfurt Airport is expected to be around 94 percent by 2030 according to current planning.<\/p>\n
