The ‘HMM Algeciras’, currently the largest container ship in the world, is leaving the port of Hamburg this afternoon after four days, heading towards South Korea. A few video impressions and the technical data showcase the impressive dimensions of this colossus.<\/p>\n

(Hamburg) The HMM Algeciras is the first of a series of twelve identical ships. It and its sister ships, with a length of 400 meters and a capacity of 23,964 standard containers, are currently the largest ships in the world. The shipping company commissioned the construction at the shipyards DSMI (Daewoo Shipping & Marine Engineering\u2019s Okpo) and SHI (Samsung Heavy Industries) for seven and five ships, respectively.Video impressions of the maiden voyage<\/a><\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0(\u00a9 HHM Algeciras Footage: HHM \/ Dietmar Hasenpusch)The series belongs to the so-called Megamax-24 container ships. The number 24 refers to the number of containers that can be placed side by side across the ship’s width. In height, 12 layers can be stacked below and 12 layers above deck. The deckhouse is positioned far forward, as is common with most mega carriers, to provide better visibility for navigation.The mega carrier is powered by a MAN B&W 1G95ME engine with an output of 60,380 kW. This allows the ship to reach a speed of 22.4 knots. The entire series is equipped with so-called scrubbers.
