Driving Bans and Alternative Routes
In Germany, strict driving bans apply during the summer months, particularly on Saturdays, for certain categories of trucks. This regulation, established under the holiday travel regulation, affects trucks with a permissible total weight of over 7.5 tons, as well as trucks with trailers and articulated lorries. The driving bans are effective from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM on numerous highway and selected federal road sections. To provide affected drivers with guidance, the BGL has developed the alternative route map, which has been updated in collaboration with the relevant traffic authorities.
The digital map enables drivers to find alternative routes, thus facilitating compliance with the driving bans. Prof. Dr. Dirk Engelhardt, spokesperson for the BGL board, emphasizes the importance of this initiative: “With the free digital alternative route map, we aim to contribute once again this year to making the daily work of truck drivers easier, who are also active on Saturdays to supply consumers and the economy.”
Digital Support for Professional Drivers
Dr. Michael Güntner, CEO of Autobahn GmbH, highlights that the integration of the alternative route map into the highway app represents an important support for the route planning of professional drivers. “Our goal is to align digital offerings consistently with the needs of road users,” explains Güntner. The collaboration between Autobahn GmbH and the BGL demonstrates how digital solutions can help better manage traffic flows and reduce congestion on highways.
Christian Hoffmann, president of BALM, adds that adherence to the holiday travel regulation during the summer months requires special attention. “It is all the more gratifying that in 2026, the digital alternative route map will again be a practical tool available to support and facilitate compliance with the regulations,” says Hoffmann.
The alternative route map is thus an important tool for truck drivers to tackle the challenges during the holiday season and comply with legal requirements.
The highway app is available for Android and iOS.
