Mar 12, 2026 at 12:45 PMNovelis has signed a strategic partnership with the rail freight company LINEAS to handle the transport of aluminum ingots, sheets, and scrap by rail in Europe. The contract stipulates that more than 1,000 freight trains will be used annually for transport between various Novelis locations in Europe, as Novelis reports.
Material distribution by rail
According to Roland Leder, Vice President of Supply Chain Novelis Europe, the collaboration with LINEAS enables a significant reduction in CO₂e emissions. „Transporting by rail saves about 78 percent of CO₂e emissions compared to road transport,“ Leder stated.
The railway plays a central role in Novelis‘ logistics network, as it accounts for 95 percent of the transport means for material deliveries between production sites in Europe. Particularly long ingots, which can weigh up to 25 tons, are primarily transported by rail. This is mainly due to weight restrictions for truck transport. The transports begin at the Novelis plant in Nachterstedt and lead to the joint venture plant „Alunorf“ in Neuss.
The Göttingen location serves as a hub for the company’s European rail logistics network, according to Novelis. Here, train formation takes place, which is intended to ensure efficient material distribution within the sites.
