The SPAR Austria Group has announced the implementation of the WAMAS Warehouse Management System (WMS) from SSI Schäfer at around 30 warehouse locations in Italy, Austria, Croatia, Hungary, and Slovenia. This initiative aims to harmonize intralogistical processes and enhance efficiency and transparency in logistics.
Modernization of Warehouse Logistics
SPAR, one of the largest retail companies in Europe, supplies millions of customers daily with food and other everyday goods. The IT unit of the SPAR Austria Group, SPAR ICS, plays a central role in the digitization of operations. The introduction of the latest version of the WAMAS WMS will create a unified system that meets the diverse requirements of the warehouse locations.
SPAR ICS employs around 750 IT experts responsible for the development and maintenance of digital processes. The upgrade of the existing WAMAS solutions, which have been in use for over 20 years, aims to further improve the performance of warehouse logistics.
WAMAS Enterprise WMS is specifically designed to meet the needs of an international retail group like SPAR. It offers a central software instance that operates in two geo-redundant data centers. This ensures high availability and allows warehouse locations to access a consistent WMS application in the respective national language.
Efficiency Increase Through Harmonization
A structured program management approach from SSI Schäfer enables the harmonization of the various WAMAS software versions. This is intended to ensure that all warehouses are brought to the same technological standard while still addressing site-specific requirements.
Andreas Kranabitl, Managing Director of SPAR ICS, commented on the company’s goals: “Our aim at SPAR ICS is to implement uniform corporate software solutions. The diversity of our warehouses – from wholesale to automated to e-commerce warehouses – presents us with particular challenges. With the upgrade of all warehouses to the latest version of the proven WAMAS WMS, we are technologically future-proof and can significantly improve product availability.”
An outstanding example of the implementation of this strategy is the new logistics center in Klinča Sela, Croatia. With around 500 employees and over 100,000 pallet spaces, it is the largest warehouse of the SPAR Austria Group. It secures the supply of approximately 140 stores in Croatia and is seamlessly integrated into the upstream and downstream systems, ensuring a high throughput of goods.
The upgrade of the WAMAS WMS brings numerous advantages, including a unified and scalable system landscape as well as optimized processes. With this strategic harmonization of software, SPAR ICS reaffirms its role as a driver of innovation within the group and aims for a powerful, connected logistics network across Europe.
