Need for action on waterways infrastructure
Mar 27, 2026 at 10:01 AMRecently, Damen Shipyards Group delivered the second of a total of four Combi-Freighters of the „3850“ type to the shipping company Bernd Sibum. The delivery took place after successful sea trials in Shanghai, as the company reports. The ships are built at the Damen Yichang shipyard in China. The first ship of this series was delivered in early February and is currently on its maiden voyage with a project cargo to Norway.
Efficiency and sustainability in focus
The new generation of „CF 3850 ships“ is designed for efficiency, according to the manufacturer. In their standard configuration, the ships can be fully operated with biofuel and are also prepared for hybrid propulsion. The shipping company Bernd Sibum has received funding to integrate additional sustainable features into the ships.
A central goal of the funding is to reduce the ecological footprint of short-sea shipping, as Damen Shipyards reports. Under the NaMKü program (Sustainable Modernization of Coastal Ships), initiated by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), the modifications of the ships are financially supported. Mare Trust AG from Oldenburg, Germany, takes the lead on the equity side.
