Chancerygate begins expansion into Germany
Mar 23, 2026 at 6:00 PMThe Austrian Post AG has announced an investment of over 1.7 million euros in the expansion of its electric heavy vehicle fleet. As part of this initiative, four new electric trucks will be put into operation, which will be deployed in Styria and Tyrol. Two of the vehicles are stationed at the logistics centers in Kalsdorf near Graz and Vomp. There, they will take over the collection of shipments from post offices and company locations and transport them to the respective delivery bases. To support the new electric trucks, fast charging stations have been set up at both locations, powered exclusively by Austrian electricity from renewable energy sources. Additionally, two more electric trucks will be deployed in Vienna, increasing the total number of electric trucks in operation there to four.
Reduction of CO₂ Emissions
Peter Umundum, Deputy General Director and Board Member for Parcel & Logistics at the Austrian Post AG, stated that the new electric trucks will replace four conventional diesel trucks. This is expected to save nearly 189 tons of direct CO₂ emissions annually. Umundum emphasized that the expansion of the electric fleet not only concerns delivery but also takes into account the transport logistics of the future. The new vehicles represent a significant step towards a lower-emission future for the regions of Styria and Tyrol.
The Post has already deployed its first electric trucks in regular operation in May 2024. Two of these vehicles shuttle between the logistics center in Vienna-Inzersdorf and Vienna International Airport and have been tested on various routes throughout Austria. The positive experiences from these deployments form the basis for the current expansion of the fleet in three federal states.
Technical Details of the New Electric Trucks
The MAN eTGS was selected for the new electric trucks, having proven to be the best bidder in the tender. The truck features a 6×2 chassis with a trailer for swap bodies (WAB containers) and also allows for trailer operation. With a battery capacity of 560 kilowatt-hours (kWh), the MAN eTGS can achieve a range of approximately 400 kilometers. The vehicle is powered by a centrally mounted synchronous electric motor with an output of 400 kilowatts (kW), enabling a total permissible weight of up to 44 tons.
The newly constructed charging stations allow the MAN eTGS to be charged from 20 to 80 percent battery level in about 90 minutes. The electricity for charging comes exclusively from renewable energy sources produced in Austria. Additionally, the logistics centers in Vienna, Kalsdorf, and Vomp are equipped with photovoltaic modules that provide a total output of approximately 9 megawatts peak (MWp).
The total investment costs for the four new electric trucks, including the charging infrastructure, amount to over 1.7 million euros. This acquisition is supported by the European Union’s funding program „Emission-Free Commercial Vehicles and Infrastructure (ENIN)“ as well as by the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).
