The global terminal operator DP World has launched a new intermodal rail service connecting its facility in Novi Sad, Serbia, with Herne, a key logistics hub in the Rhine-Ruhr region of Germany. Operated by the Austrian transport company LKW Walter, this service offers three weekly departures and reduces travel time to 45 hours. This represents a faster alternative to traditional long-distance road transport and allows for a reduction in CO₂ emissions of up to 80%.
The facility in Novi Sad is the first in Serbia to offer a regular intermodal rail connection to Western Europe. Gokhan Yurteken, General Director of DP World Novi Sad, emphasizes that this service strengthens Serbia’s integration into European supply chains and solidifies its role as a strategic trade gateway in Southeast Europe. „This service provides our customers with a faster and more predictable route from Serbia to Western Europe, reduces dependence on cross-border truck transport, and improves schedule reliability,“ explains Yurteken.
Response to Regulatory Challenges
The new rail service responds to the increasing regulatory and operational challenges in long-distance transport between Serbia and Western Europe. Companies face unpredictable transit times and growing requirements from the European Union regarding road transport, including the Entry/Exit System (EES) and stricter regulations on driver mobility, such as restrictions on the number of days drivers may spend in EU territory.
Vladica Ćulafić, Chief Commercial Officer of DP World Novi Sad, highlights that evolving regulatory requirements in road transport are prompting customers to seek solutions that offer more speed, predictability, and lower administrative complexity. „Intermodal rail transport provides all of this and also enables measurable savings in carbon emissions,“ says Ćulafić.
