SBB Cargo remains a concern in 2025 despite transformation
Mar 11, 2026 at 4:02 PMScandlines has launched the new freight ferry „The Baltic Whale“ on the Rødby–Puttgarden route. The ferry is among the largest of its kind that can operate exclusively on shore power. With this commissioning, the shipping company aims to achieve emission-free ferry operations by 2040 while simultaneously increasing capacity for freight customers.
The maiden voyage of „The Baltic Whale“ began on March 10, 2026, at 08:05. On board, alongside the crew, were freight customers who could experience the first crossing. The ferry is equipped with one of the largest battery systems currently found on a ferry and can complete the crossing without direct emissions. Additionally, it reduces noise emissions both above and below water, positively impacting the passenger experience and the marine environment.
Michael Guldmann Petersen, COO of Scandlines, stated: „This commissioning on the Fehmarnbelt is a milestone for Scandlines – a day we have waited many years for.“ The idea for a battery-powered ferry was developed back in 2018.
Freight Ferry for the Future
„The Baltic Whale“ has been specifically designed for freight transport and can accommodate 66 trucks on two decks. It is capable of efficiently transporting various types of hazardous goods, such as industrial products and auto parts. This allows for a shift of freight to this ferry, thereby creating additional capacity for cars and passengers on other Scandlines ferries, especially during peak season.
Petersen emphasizes the importance of the new ferry for the company’s strategy: „The new ferry is a crucial component of Scandlines‘ Green Ambition to ensure ferry operations without direct emissions by 2040.“ With the commissioning, the transport capacity for freight units on the Rødby–Puttgarden route increases by 27%, providing improved conditions for freight customers on board.
The ferry covers the 18.5 km route in approximately 45 minutes. Thanks to modern charging infrastructure in the ports, the charging time is only twelve minutes. An intelligent charging station ensures that the ferry is automatically ready for operation in less than 15 seconds, regardless of water levels. Additionally, the ship is equipped with diesel generators that can be used for hybrid operation if needed.
The technical specifications of „The Baltic Whale“ include a length of 147.4 m, a width of 25.4 m, and a loading capacity of 66 freight units. The maximum passenger capacity is 140, and the service speed is 16 knots. The total investment in the project amounts to 84 million EUR.
