Mar 6, 2026 at 11:50 AMThe Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC) is considered by the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) as a crucial technology for the future of rail freight transport in Europe, according to a statement. It replaces the long-used manual screw coupler and automates the previous coupling process. In addition to the mechanical and pneumatic connection of freight cars, which occurs via compressed air lines for the brakes, the DAC also enables the transmission of power and data.
The RCG claims to play an active role in the development of the DAC. With the „DAC demo train,“ the system is being tested and further developed with the aim of bringing it to series production. Recent winter tests in Austria have shown, according to the RCG, that the technology works reliably even under challenging climatic conditions. Following technical preparations and the integration of various coupling systems, the „DAC demo train“ has been put into operation. This test train serves, according to the RCG, to verify the interaction of mechanics, electronics, and data transmission, ensuring that the systems are compatible across manufacturers.
