Feb 13, 2026 at 10:48 AMThe Koralmbahn has been in operation for freight traffic since November 1, 2025, and has already transported over 1 million tons of goods in the first 100 days. This was announced by ÖBB Rail Cargo Group at a press event on the premises of the industrial company Alpacem. During this period, around 1,050 freight trains with more than 21,000 cars were deployed.
Efficiency and Capacity in Freight Transport
According to the company, the new route enables shorter travel times and higher efficiency, leading to better utilization of transport capacities. The flat route of the Koralmbahn has a maximum gradient of 10 per mille, compared to 16 per mille on previous routes. This allows for higher trailer loads and contributes to energy savings. According to ÖBB Rail Cargo Group, up to 300,000 train kilometers can be avoided annually due to the new route.
Mobility Minister Peter Hanke emphasizes the strategic importance of the Koralmbahn for mobility in Austria. He highlights that the modern infrastructure not only promotes the shift of traffic to rail but also strengthens businesses and contributes to climate protection.
