Fraport and Kühne+Nagel have signed a lease agreement for a new air freight warehouse at Frankfurt Airport. The new facility will be built in CargoCity South and is expected to be completed by the end of 2028. With this project, Fraport aims to further advance the development of CargoCity South as a significant location for air freight.
Julia Kranenberg, a member of the Executive Board and Chief Retail and Real Estate Officer of Fraport AG, expressed her pleasure at Kühne+Nagel’s decision to expand its presence at Frankfurt Airport. She emphasized that the new warehouse will provide a modern and efficient air freight facility, offering the logistics company exceptional growth and expansion opportunities at Europe’s leading freight location.
Martin Schäfer, Senior Vice President Air Logistics Germany at Kühne+Nagel, stated that Frankfurt is an important global access point in Kühne+Nagel’s air logistics network. He highlighted that the new freight facility will provide the necessary infrastructure, capacity, and connectivity to support the company’s growth ambitions and maintain the flow of goods. This is particularly important for customers in rapidly growing sectors such as healthcare, semiconductors, high technology, and cloud infrastructure.
Fraport will oversee the construction of the new warehouse, which will remain part of its own building portfolio. Kühne+Nagel has been active at the Frankfurt freight location for over 20 years, and the leasing of the new warehouse will further strengthen the company’s presence.
The construction site for the new warehouse is located in the air freight area 2 of the airport and covers an area of approximately 16,900 m². It is situated directly next to access gate 31 of the airport. The building will feature over 7,600 m² of warehouse space as well as an additional 1,100 m² for offices and social rooms. With 16 gates and truck docks, the facility offers ample space for driving and maneuvering movements. Furthermore, the concept has been developed with strict environmental criteria in mind. A large photovoltaic system will be installed on the roof, feeding green electricity into the airport’s grid. Fraport also aims to have the building certified according to the Gold standard of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).
The new facility is a central component of Fraport’s strategy to actively participate in the growth of the air freight market. As part of this strategy, Fraport has developed a CargoHub master plan aimed at further strengthening the FRA freight location in the coming years. The master plan includes three key initiatives: space optimization, space development, and digitalization and process innovation. Through these measures, Fraport is working to sustainably develop the FRA freight location to meet growing demand. This is intended to ensure that partners and customers in Frankfurt continue to benefit from optimal growth conditions, including high connectivity, modern infrastructure, and efficient processes.
